Reading | Anton Weil: Super einsam

Foto: Bahar Kaygusuz

The next reading on Thursday, November 6, continues our autumn tradition: Anton Weil will read from his novel Super einsam, which tells with great empathy about the search for belonging, loneliness, love, and the awakening of an entire generation.

The book immerses readers in the stream of thoughts of Vito: escaping from the freezing apartment in Kreuzberg, searching for meaning and closeness, haunted by memories of his late mother, and driven by longing, dares, and restlessness. Anton Weil succeeds in capturing the major themes of his generation in a colourful, compelling narrative style.

The reading will take place in German and starts at 7 p.m., admission begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free as long as seats are available.

[Surviving] Life in a Risk Environment

The locations of open drug scenes are described by parts of the majority society as so-called ‘fear spaces’ that evoke feelings of insecurity and discomfort. At the same time, open drug scenes create a risk environment for users, as a multitude of drug-related harms are associated with them. To date, it remains largely unclear how public space is perceived as a risk environment from the perspective of drug consumers.

The exhibition '(Surviving) Life in a Risk Environment' provides insights into the living situations of people in the open drug scene at Cologne’s Neumarkt, across twelve thematically structured exhibition panels. The images displayed were created as part of an exploratory study using the participatory method of auto-photography, in which visitors of the drug consumption room selected and photographed places from their everyday lives. The photos are complemented by quotes from interviews conducted with participants and impressions from several social space walkthroughs, which enabled the mapping of the open drug scene at Neumarkt.

The exhibition is a collaborative project between the Technical University of Nuremberg Georg Simon Ohm (Prof. Dr. Daniel Deimel) and the University of Wuppertal (Dr. Tim Lukas). An accompanying brochure is available for download on the homepage of the Department for Civil Protection, Disaster Assistance, and Object Security.
